Did you know that until the 17th century St Patrick’s Day was a catholic feast day, one for prayer and quiet reflection. In the 19th century Irish ex pats in America started using the date as a celebration of their homeland and it evolved into the raucous celebration we know it to be today

St. Patrick’s revelers thought wearing green made one invisible to leprechauns, fairy creatures who would pinch anyone they could see (anyone not wearing green). People began pinching those who didn’t wear green as a reminder that leprechauns would sneak up and pinch green-abstainers
Fun Fact
St Patrick was not even Irish, he was an English missionary. He was credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland, also with banishing all the snakes from Ireland. How’s that for multi tasking.
What To Do
For a celebration of all aspects of Irish culture head to Prince Alfred Park, where a festival will have fun activities for the whole family.
For those who only want to celebrate more specific parts of Irish culture, pints of guiness seem to be the most fitting way to pay tribute to the emerald isle’s most celebrated snake hunter.
Personally nothing seems more celebratory than hoisting a dimple pint in the air beefing out Irish drinking songs until closing time.
